Shell Aviation to supply Emirates with 300,000 gallons of SAF

Emirates have announced an agreement that will see Shell Aviation supply over 300,000 gallons of blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The first fuel delivery to DXB – Emirates’ international hub – is scheduled before the end of 2023. It will be the first time that SAF is supplied through the airport’s fuelling system.

“We are proud to work in partnership with Shell to make SAF supply available for Emirates in Dubai for the first time … We hope that this collaboration develops further to provide an ongoing future supply of SAF in our hub, as there are currently no production facilities for SAF in the UAE,” said Tim Clark, president, Emirates.

The SAF delivery and use data will be tracked through Avelia, a blockchain powered solution allowing Emirates to buy physical SAF and the associated environmental attributes to help decarbonise its Scope 1 emissions. On the flipside, the platform also allows Shell Corporate Travel to purchase Scope 3 environmental attributes associated to the same physical SAF.

Avelia allows both airlines and corporates to share the environmental benefits of SAF via the book and claim solution.

“Enabling SAF to be supplied at DXB for the first time is an important milestone, and a perfect example of how the different parts of the aviation value chain have a role to play in unlocking progress on SAF. We hope that this can act as a springboard for more action on SAF across the aviation industry in the UAE and region, delivering another step forward for our net zero emissions journey.” said Chu Yong-Yi, vice president, Shell Corporate Travel.

Emirates operated its first SAF-fuelled flight in 2017 from Chicago. The airline also operates flights from Paris, Lyon and Oslo with SAF. Earlier in 2023, the airline operated a one-hour demonstration flight using 100% SAF at DXB airport.

Shell Aviation also entered in an agreement with Delta Air Lines to provide 10m gallons of neat SAF to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) over a two-year period.
