Paraclete Aviation Life Support announces its Annual Aviation Life Support Equipment (ALSE) Level II Certified Maintenance Training Course scheduled on April 23 at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Completion of the eight-hour maintenance training course will certify personnel qualified to disassemble, assemble, and troubleshoot Paraclete helmet products.

Paraclete has secured certifications for four of its five sizes of the Aegis (“ee-jis” meaning “protection”) D Type 1, all five sizes of the Aspid (“a-speed-a” meaning “shield”) Type 1, and all five sizes of the Aspida Carbon helmet set forth by the Department of Interior (DOI) and the United States Forest Services (USFS) civilian helmet aviation standard. Tested to five sizes, the company’s Aspida and Aegis helmets are available in S-XXL.

“At Paraclete, we hold pilot safety and protection through education paramount in our product research, design, manufacturing, as well as knowledge and application of helmet maintenance,” said Paraclete founder and president Scott Hedges. “As a standard practice, we provide our clients with Level II ASLE training knowing the quality of maintenance requires a consistent awareness of applying the annual training to uphold preventive maintenance services and inspections.”

Rotor industry expert Joseph Licina will address helmet testing standards and requirements to meet those standards. His presentation will cover what the military knows to be the true definition of “survivability” requirements as discovered through decades of aircraft accident investigations.

“Attendees will learn the different kinds of testing conducted on the helmet and the helmet’s retention assembly, chin strap, the shell, liner, the visor, all of the components that are equally critical to the overall safety value of the helmet,” said Licina.

With over 20 years of military service in the U.S. Army as an instructor pilot as well as 26 years as a civil servant, Licina has been a consultant for the past nine years where he serves as a researcher, instructor, and speaker. Throughout his exceptional military-to-civilian career, Licina worked as an accident investigator for the U.S. Army, National Transportation Safety Board as well as an FAA investigator, conducting over 200 rotor accident investigations since his first investigation in 1972.

Since 1983, Licina has worked with the USAARL where he met Scott Hedges who was “proactively requesting our assessment of his current products, specifically helmet protection systems, while seeking our expertise regarding any information he needed to go forward with design and development.”

“Scott has always pushed himself to develop innovative designs with safety at the forefront,” he said. “He is clearly respected in the rotor industry, in the military profession and in rotor safety research and development. He brings an open mind to totally understand the requirements that need to be met, while we show him where he is in the product development process.”

Paraclete’s product development is directed by evidence-based research and innovative solutions while representing a rare and independent business Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the United States Army Aeromedical Research Laboratories (USAARL). “To research and develop our helmets to meet the DOI’s civilian aviation helmet standard, we worked with USAARL for the most part, to exceed the standard,” said Hedges.

In fact, it was Licina who assisted Scott in obtaining his first CRADA with the USAARL.

“We [USAARL experts] knew who he was when he walked in the door given his experience and accomplishments in the 160th,” said Licina. “Those of us in the military know how he honestly took care of those in his charge during his military years, and we see the same level of sincere service in how he takes care of his customers in the civilian world as the president of Paraclete. He also has that spirit of teamwork, of cooperation with an open mind and the desire to try innovative approaches, a new step in the design process, is rare in today’s world, and yet it is the characteristic required to build trust and respect while building an exceptional product. We always welcome Scott in the aeromed lab because he knows how to get the job done and will do it right.”

Paraclete provides clients with scheduling and location flexibility as requested by each client. Attendees at the Nashville class will be provided with a complimentary tool kit after the completion of the hands-on training conducted by a highly qualified instructor. Note: Class size maximum of 12 attendees. All attendees are required to provide a Paraclete helmet or a SPH-style helmet for the training course.
