The Greek Navy, a member of NATO since 1952, has signed an agreement with Altus LSA in Greece and Alpha Unmanned Systems (AUS) in Spain for the purchase of five new Alpha 900 UAV helicopters for use on board their ships with the objective of improving maritime security and surveillance. This is the first major and prominent NATO customer for AUS to acquire the Alpha 900, reinforcing the prospects for this product and its positioning in a competitive market.

The new Alpha 900 can take off vertically from a moving vessel and land autonomously on a navy ship, requiring little space to perform these two essential operations. It can also fly for a longer period of time than other UAVs of similar size (up to 4 hours) and carry payloads of up to 4 kg. In addition, it is built “Stanag Compliant,” with the aim that all critical systems are redundant. All of this makes it a perfect technology for navies, coast guards and/or intelligence operations, surveillance, approach to targets and/or reconnaissance work at sea.

A large number of navies around the world, coast guards and the like have recently taken an interest in UAVs for issues related to maritime security and critical surveillance missions. For example, and due to the increase in migration through the Mediterranean, this area needs greater surveillance, as well as key points such as straits, ports and nuclear facilities. Naval units and the use of UAVs on board can provide greater deployment capabilities and fast and accurate results.

Zacharias Sarris, CEO of Altus LSA, provider of drone systems for the Greek Navy, says that “we are very pleased to help introduce the Alpha 900 in Greece. There are many pressing needs and the Alpha and its UAV helicopters are a perfect fit for the different mission needs. “

Eric Freeman, CEO of Alpha Unmanned Systems, states that, “We are very proud to support the Hellenic Navy in its maritime safety efforts in the Mediterranean and that the Alpha 900 UAV helicopter meets very demanding requirements. The confidence that the Greek Navy has shown in the A900 has generated interest from other potential customers around the world, and we will soon be ready to announce similar commitments with other partners. “

The Alpha 900 will allow smaller military UAVs to take off and land on naval vessels, replacing larger and much more expensive UAVs for ISTAR-related missions. A complete Alpha 900 system includes:

  • 2 Alpha 900 fuel engine UAV helicopters with dual sensor optical payloads
  • 1 maritime control station to control UAVs and their cargoes
  • 1 antenna for data transmission and control
