EASA approves Vuichard Recovery Technique

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has officially recognized the Vuichard Recovery Technique as a method to escape vortex ring state, and has published it in the latest edition of the Helicopter Flight Instructor Guide (page 164).

The move from EASA follows that of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which included the technique in its updated Helicopter Flying Handbook, published in October 2019.

“Ultimately, there needs to be only one recovery technique that works and is reflexively applied in all operating situations, because humans can reflexively apply only one recovery technique in a low-g feeling at low speed,” said Claude Vuichard, president of the Vuichard Recovery Aviation Safety Foundation.

“The Vuichard Recovery Technique works in all operating conditions with tailwind, at low altitude, in front of obstacles with external loads, and in hoist operation — and even preventively if an updraft suddenly collapses.”
