Enersens to provide thermal barriers for the Lilium Jet’s batteries

The Lilium Pioneer Edition Jet is the first planned model of the Lilium Jet and will comfortably seat four passengers, with an estimated non-stop flight range of 175 km and speed of 250 km/h. Lilium Image

Enersens (Rochetoirin, France) has been selected by Lilium (Munich, Germany) as a supplier of its advanced thermal barrier solution for Lilium’s electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

As part of the multi-year contract, Enersens will supply its Skogar blanket that will prevent thermal runaway from spreading inside battery packs, and ensure Lilium can deliver the right combination of high performance and safety for its battery pack.

Enersens’ product range includes ultra-thin blankets (starting at 0.5 millimeter thickness) with the lowest thermal conductivity on the market (as low as 0.012 W/(m.K)) and excellent flame resistance (up to 1,300 C), while being capable of withstanding high compressive stresses.

Based on silica aerogel and manufactured via an innovative and strongly patented process, Skogar blankets are best-in-class for thermal insulation while being non-flammable, non-toxic and made from sustainable materials.

They are a perfect solution when top performance is required within a constrained volume. Inter-cells insulation within a battery pack is one of the key applications where Skogar out-performs competitor products.

Leveraging 12-plus years of research and development (R&D), Enersens is a recognized leader in high performance silica aerogel solutions.

Its focus is now on ramping up production capacity for Skogar in order to meet the strong interest from clients in automotive, aerospace, urban mobility and small electronics industries.
