Expanding SAF production a strategic priority: Calumet


Calumet Speciality Products said the company is currently working to increase its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production capacity as it’s Department of Energy (DoE) loan program discussions reach advanced stages.

“Significant further expansion of SAF production remains a strategic priority, and we remain encouraged by the well-advanced DOE loan program discussions,” said Calumet Speciality Products in its first quarter 2024 operational update on its Montana Renewables facility.

Calumet’s produces around 30m gallons of SAF per annum at the Montana site.

“Our advantaged feed and technology positions are complemented by agile product marketing and our position as the largest producer of SAF in the Western Hemisphere, with current production levels running at a 30m gallon per year pace,” as per the company’s statement.

Montana Renewables is one of the largest biofuel producer in the US with a total capacity of 184m gallons per annum. The company produces both SAF as well as renewable diesel (RD) at its Montana site.

Earlier in May 2023, Montana Renewables began SAF shipments to Shell Trading in the US under a multi-year agreement.

Calumet is currently in advanced stages of securing a DoE loan of $600m. The company plans to use these funds to upgrade its SAF production to 276m gallons per annum.
