LanzaTech permitted to setup SAF plant at Port Talbot

LanzaTech UK, a subsidiary of LanzaTech Global, announced that it has been granted permission to setup a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility on a former-industrial site at Crown Wharf.

Construction of the facility is due to commence in winter 2024 and production is scheduled to begin in 2026. Once in operation, the proposed alcohol-to-jet facility in Port Talbot would produce about 100m litres of SAF per annum, around 10% of the sustainable aviation fuel that the UK plans to use by 2030.

However, the company awaits legislation, investment and offtake agreements to move forward to a final investment decision.

The application for the facility received a unanimous vote for approval by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Planning Committee. Neath Port Talbot is a county borough in the south-west of Wales.

“We are delighted that Neath Port Talbot Council has approved our planning application. This milestone marks an important step for Project Dragon and demonstrates the potential for Port Talbot to transition to clean green industries that build on its heritage whilst providing jobs and wider benefits for the local community,” said Jim Woodger, managing director, LanzaTech UK.
