MAIRE to install RD/SAF production unit at Holborn refinery

Technology and engineering group MAIRE announced that its subsidiary Kinetics Technology (KT) has been selected for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Holbron Europa Raffinerie to develop hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) complex inside the existing Holborn refinery in Hamburg, Germany to produce renewable diesel (RD) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

“This important success confirms the pivotal role of MAIRE Group in the energy transition, and its ability to take on the decarbonisation challenges in hard-to-abate sectors, by leveraging on its unparalleled technological portfolio and know how integrated by world-class engineering and execution capabilities,” said Alessandro Bernini, CEO, MAIRE Group.

The company said that the project will leverage on both KT’s execution and NextChem’s technological capabilities. NextChem, which specialises in designing solutions to enable sustainable processes, is also owned by MAIRE.

Once completed, the plant will produce approximately 220,000 tons per year of RD and SAF using waste and residues feedstocks, biomasses and the residues of the agribusiness industry, as well as low carbon hydrogen.

The plant is expected to be operational in early 2027 and will cost around $400m.
