Montana Renewables delivers SAF to Detroit Metropolitan Airport

A shipment of 7,000 gallons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel was delivered to Dearborn, Michigan from Montana Renewables, LLC. The SAF will be transferred to Detroit Metropolitan Airport via pipeline to fuel Delta flights.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer Montana Renewables announced that it has successfully delivered its inaugural shipment of 7,000 gallons of SAF to Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW).

This shipment, transported through the Buckeye Pipeline system, marks a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of air travel.

The SAF, produced from camelina oil, will be used by Delta Air Lines on flights departing from DTW.

“Supplying the SAF to DTW marks another significant milestone in the decarbonization of air travel,” said Bruce Fleming, CEO of Montana Renewables.

“Not only does it bring SAF to Detroit flights, but we are especially pleased to pioneer camelina oil as a non-food renewable that provides additional cash crop potential for farmers.”

The delivery of SAF to DTW underscores MRL’s commitment to providing innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. As the demand for SAF continues to grow, MRL is poised to play a pivotal role in reducing aviation’s environmental impact.

Earlier this week, Montana Renewables secured a $1.44bn guarantee to transform their existing facility in Great Falls, Montana, into a SAF production centre from the US Department of Energy. The project aims to increase biofuel production from 140m to 315m gallons per year, demonstrating the potential for repurposing existing infrastructure for sustainable fuel production.
