Jakarta-based PT Kilan Pertamina Internasional (KPI) announced that it is has achieved the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC), Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and European Union (EU) certificates to produce SAF from used cooking oil (UCO).
“The TDHT (Treated Distillate Hydro Treating-ed) Unit located at the Cilacap Refinery has successfully achieved ISCC Corsia and EU certification for SAF in early December 2024,” said KPI corporate secretary Hermansyah Y Nasroen.
Hermansyah said the certification will help the company achieve its goals to produce SAF and export the same in to the EU market as well. He said that the company is innovating to produce Pertamina SAF through the USAF Project (UCO to SAF) which was launched in 2024.
“KPI was previously able to produce Pertamina SAF with Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO) or palm kernel oil raw materials, and now KPI is ready to take steps by producing the first ISCC-certified Pertamina SAF in Indonesia/Regional with used cooking oil raw materials planned for the first quarter of 2025,” said Hermansyah.
Furthermore, Hermansyah said, in preparation for the production of SAF from used cooking oil, it is scheduled that in January 2025 the catalyst will be replaced which is capable of processing used cooking oil into SAF at the Cilacap Refinery.
“The catalyst that will be used is the result of the development of Pertamina’s Technology and Innovation in collaboration with experts and engineers of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional. This catalyst is produced at a domestic catalyst factory facility. This shows the mastery of advanced technology by Indonesian engineers,” concluded Hermansyah.
PT Pertamina announced a partnership with European aerospace giant Airbus to explore the development of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) ecosystem in Indonesia. The two firms will focus on studying Indonesia’s domestic SAF feedstock potential, logistics, and commercial viability.
