The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) said that it is conducting a feasibility study to ascertain the potential of turning municipal waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
“In principal, the target is general waste in Tokyo; however, if it’s not possible to secure the properties and amount of general waste necessary for SAF production, business profitability etc. , after consultation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in advance, industrial waste from inside and outside Tokyo will be considered,” according a press release issued by the city’s government.
The TMG is also considering subsidies. Projects producing SAF that meet the ASTM D7566 technical certification can qualify for up to Yen 25m subsidies. Moreover, the plant must have the capacity to process more than 50 metric tonnes per day.
However, companies can also set up pilot or demonstration plants with much lower capacity.
Japanese government is mulling a 10% SAF target for airlines flying from the country from 2030 with neat SAF. The mandate is likely to come in to effect by mid 2024.
Japanese firms have picked up pace over the last 18 months in an effort to set up SAF production facilities, securing feedstock and launching corporate SAF programme for business flyers.
