The United States Helicopter Safety Team is looking for a volunteer industry co-chair to steer ongoing work to reduce and ultimately eliminate fatal U.S. civil helicopter accidents. Joining efforts with a government co-chair, a 12-member steering committee, 18 work group leaders, and over 100 team volunteers, the future co-chair will have plenty of support.

“I’ve been deeply honored to co-chair the USHST for what will soon be four years. As my tenure ends, I look forward to helping my replacement hit the ground running and continue the rewarding work that we do to help improve safety in our industry and ‘keep it in the green,’” remarked Nick Mayhew, the outgoing industry co-chair.

“Nick has done a fantastic job, serving with distinction as he helped lead the USHST,” said Karen Gattis (USHST co-chair, FAA AFG-300). We will miss his leadership but welcome the fresh perspective that, by design, a limited tenure brings to our team. An ideal candidate is a director of operations, chief pilot, or similar role with a helicopter operator that is a safety leader in words and deeds.” Karen continues, “A committed leader backed by a company that willingly seizes the opportunity to advance safety in our industry, despite competing priorities, is one that we think should be given the opportunity to take the controls next.”

The USHST will review co-chair nominations and applications between November 2022 and January 2023, and plans to elect and name a new industry co-chair on March 6, 2023 at HAI Heli-Expo in Atlanta, Georgia.
