Vertical Valor shortlisted for 2021 Defence Media Awards

The bow of the doomed Atlantic Destiny fishing vessel points skyward as the ship sinks into the Atlantic Ocean.

MHM Publishing is pleased to announce that two features published in Vertical Valor magazine are shortlisted for the 2021 Defence Media Awards, which will be presented in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 10.

In the Best Military Rotorcraft category, Valor contributing editor Chris Thatcher and editor Dan Parsons co-bylined the article “Atlantic Destiny” about a joint Royal Canadian Air Force-U.S. Coast Guard mission that rescued more than two dozen fisherman from a doomed vessel on a stormy North Atlantic night. The story was published in the Spring 2021 issue of Valor.

Canada-based Thatcher and U.S.-based Parsons interviewed pilots and commanders of the RCAF CH149 Cormorant and Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crews that responded 200 miles at sea. The story weaves a narrative of how the two services coordinated a successful response to the stricken vessel and eventually saved 31 lives.

In the Breaking News category, contributing editor Skip Robinson is nominated for his blow-by-blow of the rescues of hundreds of people from the massive Creek Fire over Labor Day weekend 2020 by the California National Guard. For the story, California-based Robinson interviewed the pilots and crew of a CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk that later received presidential recognition for rescuing more than 200 people from the blaze. The story was posted online as a breaking story and another version was published in the Fall 2020 issue of Valor.

“We’re once again proud to see our editors recognized for their outstanding work covering military aviation,” said Mike Reyno, owner of MHM Publishing, publisher of Vertical, Valor, Skies, and eVTOL.com. “While continuing to cover law enforcement, helicopter EMS and search-and-rescue operations, Valor has become a leader in military rotorcraft journalism. These stories underscore the comprehensive reporting our team of diverse and dispersed editors regularly provide.”
